Waving goodbye to an unforgettable year

I am sending away an incredible year during which a beautiful and precious boy was born into our life and who showed me what true meaning and purpose are. I have been gifted with the opportunity to watch him grow and share his milestones, experiencing the strongest emotions of love and pride. His first smile, his first tooth, his first word and much more.

Parent-facing pushchair vs Forward-facing one?

It was one of those days when you do exactly the same things as usual, but somehow everything ends up differently. The same baby class you have been attending for ages, but unexpectedly you make a new friend. The same route you take to the park and back, but experiencing something new. Coming home at the same time, but feeling with uplifted spirits. Today was such day.

How prepared are we for emergencies?

3 weeks ago I was sitting in front of this very same laptop working on my new post, the first one after the few months break. It was dark, stormy and rainy day, not a chance for the sunlight to shine through the clouds. But it was also a good day, because I was spending a cozy day in with Alex, finally feeling back in tune with my writing blog self. Yes, my thoughts were flowing, there weren't any more excuses for me not to sit and write and my motivation and inspiration were coming back. A new fresh feeling was taking over me, a new start.

Why we shouldn't give up on our dreams

Since, I came back from our holiday (to my home country), I have been struggling concentrating and working on my posts. I have a list of topics I want to write about, but I just can’t come around to sit and transfer my thoughts onto the “white paper”. Something is just missing and I am… just not the same…

I started this blog thanks to my amazing partner and his incredible support and belief in me and my abilities. He was the one to “plant the seed” in my head and carefully water it for a few months. How he got so determined to do so… The answer lies somewhere between September and December, 2013 - my third trimester of the pregnancy and also the months which I spend retaking a semester at University.

When life takes us on unexpected journeys

There are those little or big things you wish for, every time before bed, or every time you wake up, or simply when you see them happening to other people. You might wish for a passionate love, great job or a friend (the cool mother from the baby class, who speaks to everyone, knows everything and has remembered your baby’s name straight away!)... The list is long. What about when your wish suddenly comes true, but it’s nothing that you have expected and actually, disappoints you? Sadly, it can be a true story.

Sunday's Kitchen: Mushroom Frittata with Cherry Tomatoes and Basil

Not long ago I shared with you a new cooking gem that we found, called Healing Foods. We are still discovering the book, but my excitement hasn't vanished just yet. I love the amazing facts that the book reveals and all of the so-irresistible-looking recipes. And on top of that, they are all healthy! I deffinitely recommend it to every household, where it should be kept as a guide to improve your health through food. If you feel like your body constantly needs something extra, Healing Foods may contain the answer.

Weaning Continues and Chicco Happy Snack Highchair Review

Weaning has been on our agenda for quite some time now, and not surprisingly - it is really a big and important step. Also, a very confusing one! It is true that loads of help and information is available, but nothing becomes really clear until you finally started doing it yourself! We began our journey a month ago (you can follow some of our experiences chronologically HereHere and Here) but the real deal started just now, when our highchair arrived. And what a chair, I couldn't be more pleased with our purchase and I am going to tell you why in a very short while!

Sunday's Kitchen: Mushroom Risotto Sprinkled with Parmesan and Soy Sauce

This week's dish is again inspired by the summer and it is a light, delicious and very easy meal to cook. Apparently, the Mushroom Risotto has become one of my mum's new specialties and she treated us to it, during our holiday (2 Weeks with my Family).

2 Weeks

Undoubtedly, the good times pass so fast and I am once more typing from the keyboard of my laptop and reminiscing about the heartwarming moments I just recently spent with my family. I am already used to coming and going, but even after 4 years of separation and reuniting with my other half of loved ones, it still feels like the first time. The first time I went away in search of my happiness. And 4 years later I found it, in the smile of my little boy, who just met his mum's family for the first time.

A short summary of an eventful week and a Sunday's Refreshing Homemade Lemonade

It has been a while, actually it seems like it has been ages, since the last post, but it has been such an eventful week during which we crossed some BIG ticks from the "have to experience list"!

Sunday's Kitchen: Mediterranean Vegetable Medley

There is a story behind today's recipe and if you haven't read it yet, you can catch up here: Healing Foods and How to Fight Colds with Natural Remedies.

Today's meal is selected from the book Healing Foods and it is a perfect option if you want to help:

  •  stregthen your immune system
  •  improve your circulation
  •  remove toxins from the body

Healing Foods & How To Fight Colds With Natural Remedies

The sunny days are here and so are the colds and flu. One moment it is raining and the next the sun is dazzling.  I can't think of any solutions for dealing with the weather, except to try and make the most of it (maybe escape on holiday to a much warmer place?) However, these drastic changes can not only affect the mood, but also the health.

ElevEase - Beauty Care Made Easy!

"Dear diary,  I am almost 7 months pregnant and I am getting bigger with every other day. I am becoming slower and I find it harder to do some basic daily activities. I bump into everything and my balance and mobility are worse than ever, it is especially difficult when I am in the shower and I am always afraid not to fall. At this stage exfoliating my toes and shaving my legs are probably the last things on my mind… ”

If I was keeping a diary during the pregnancy, I would probably have a chapter like this. I am not pregnant anymore, but I still remember how heavy and hard to move I was feeling. I don't think it will be too much if I compare it to: "like an elephant in a glass shop"!

The Diary Of Weaning Part 1 - The Attempt

Something very exciting and completely unplanned happened yesterday - we tried to give Alex his first bites! Well, it looked more like he was biting the spoon, while the milky - rice bits were going everywhere else, but not in his stomach... still, let me tell you all about it.

Sunday's Kitchen: Creamy Tagliatelle with Pancetta and Cherry Tomatoes

Hello on a Sunday! Hope you had a good week! It's Sunday's Kitchen with another lovely savory recipe. I hope you enjoyed the Duck last week! (if you haven't checked yet ----> Chinese 5 Spiced Roasted Duck)  This time the recipe is simple, but very tasty, all you need is few products and half an hour! It's one of my new favourites, everyone loves pasta, so do I, but this pasta is just amazing! I tried it just recently, but Sam has cooked this since a kid with his mum. It's a popular recipe, but he has adapted it to his taste to become what is Creamy Tagliatelle with Pancetta and Cherry Tomatoes.

Happy International Children's Day!

Hey, do you know that today is International Children's Day? If not, hurry and give your little one a big hug and a kiss! In my country the 1st June has always been a widely celebrated day and I can't help but feel a little bit nostalgic about the times I was a child myself.

Chinese 5 Spiced Roasted Duck with Sugar snap Peas and Pan fried Asparagus covered in a unique Peach Sauce & Peking Duck Pancakes Starter

Starting Sunday's Kitchen a few weeks ago, I thought it will be the perfect way to finally put down our favourite recipes and also spread our love for cooking. We do love cooking  (our dad loves cooking)  we love enjoying it, and I love documenting everything. The plan was to start with our favourite recipes, but what are plans really for if not to change in the last minute?

Don’t let baby blues ruin precious moments

One of our very irresistible charms as women is undoubtedly our crazy hormones. Yes, we all know how we can be all over the place – up, down, in between or sometimes we just can’t find a place! And it becomes even more fun when you become pregnant and then when you give birth. It is a whole new challenge for you and everyone around you getting to see how far you can actually go, changing your moods all the time.

Review: Tommee Tippee Prep Machine

It was a random stroll in Toys "R" Us when I saw Tommee Tippee Prep Machine for the first time and no, I wasn’t impressed, I was shocked! First, because it looked more like a coffee machine, rather than a baby accessory, and second, because it seemed somehow too much! A machine preparing milk, yes, that’s right, a very own with a big button which you press and then wait for the milk to be prepared.

Sunday's Kitchen: Homemade burgers with homemade wedges

BBQ mode is on! The sun is shining, the colours are bright and what better time for a homemade barbecue than an unusually hot May weekend! This week will be the first one to introduce a savory recipe. After the sweet start with Cheesecake, Brownie and Cookies, it's time for something different!

Personalised presents?

Valentine’s is long gone, but I really enjoyed coming up with an idea for a present this year. It’s sentimental and is something that can be gifted any time of the year, but Valentine’s was the occasion I felt inspired to make it.

It wasn’t long before I had an idea of what I want to get. My partner is interested in photography and he just recently got 2 retro cameras, so I thought a photo album will be ideal add to his hobby. I found an album online and it was just a matter of time to arrive.

Sunday's Kitchen: Chocolate Chip Cookies and Charity Car boot Sale

Happy Sunday and welcome to Sunday’s Kitchen! We love cooking and I thought it would be nice to share some of our favorite recipes. We had a sweet start with the Cheesecake and Brownie and it will be a third week in a row to share a dessert, but no, we don’t eat just sweets and soon there will be some delicious savory recipes! Until then, it’s time for some Chocolate Chip Cookies!

Recovering from a C-section

I have never really thought about C-section much, even when I was pregnant I didn’t consider it as an option. However, hearing the word Cesarean, I would recall the silly phrase “too posh, to push” and I would think of celebrities and a procedure that is private and expensive. Until, I was lying in the hospital bed and after hours of unsuccessful attempts to have my baby, my only option, according to the doctors, was to have an emergency c-section.

Sunday's Kitchen - Gooey Chocolate Brownie

It’s Sunday again and time for Mum’s First Diary Sunday’s Kitchen! It’s a week since the theme was launched with the Delightful Strawberry and Coconut Cheesecake and I am happy to share another very favorite recipe. Yes it’s a delicious desert again (!) and the title says it all – Gooey Chocolate Brownie. Mmm..

Nice maternity wear, but where?

I already shared with you about my love for the Post-maternity Style, but before the "after pregnancy" shopping therapy, there was a time I had to go out and find my first maternity clothes.

Typically, before I started looking for maternity clothes I continued to like clothes from the normal women’s range. But I soon realized that I was wearing them only one or two times before they would feel tight and uncomfortable. The worst was that I was looking fat, rather than pregnant. (Do you remember the time when your bump was still not fully shaped baby bump, and it looked more like a wobbling jelly?)

Some women start "growing" early in their pregnancy, others don't need bigger size clothes until their third trimester. No matter which type you are, after the 5-6th month, going for pregnancy clothes becomes inevitable.

Sunday's Kitchen - Delightful Strawberry and Coconut Cheesecake

Mums First Diary is delighted to launch its first weekly themeSunday’s Kitchen! We happened to have an amazing dad, who is also a great cook and it will be a real shame if we don’t share some of his delicious meals he cooks for us. I used to cook, but since I tried his creations, I decided it would be better to step back and just enjoy. Still, as I have the biggest sweet tooth in the family, I keep myself responsible for the desserts, so we keep it fair… J

Thoughts on parenthood inspired by Peaches Geldof

The last column Peaches Geldof wrote for the baby magazine Mother & Baby, has touched many people, not only because it was her last, but also because many mums can relate to it. Reading this beautiful, but also heartbreaking article left me feeling very moved and send me into some deep thoughts about something that big percentage of mums experience at some point of their life - feelings of loneliness and abandonment.

Preserving the traditions

My family and I have never missed to follow the traditions and celebrate every holiday together. But since, I came to live and study in the UK 4 years ago, the holidays became more of a reminder that I am away from home, rather than a happy occasion.

It’s funny because I used to not appreciate the values that holiday brings, but several Christmases’, New Year’s, Easter’s and Birthdays away from my family, made me realize it’s not about the celebration, but the people you are celebrating with. And the only people, who could fill my heart with love and make the holiday meaningful, were thousand miles away.

When your angel turns into a little monster

Unfortunately, with all the love, joy, happiness and unicorns comes some “I just want to sit and cry” moments, when you want to shut out from the world and dive into your own misery. But you can’t, because you have a baby, that won’t stop crying. And yes, this is probably the reason for your drama.

Have you heard the saying:  little kids little problems, big kids big problems? Alex is still far from being a big kid, but I think I start to understand what we got ourselves into! Having a newborn is absolutely exhausting, but having a 3 month old that won’t go to sleep, won’t sit in his bouncy chair, won’t eat and won’t do anything else except for testing your nerves… is a whole new level of being a parent.

For a good night's sleep

One thing I didn’t think at all during the pregnancy was how I am going to learn to live without proper sleep. For someone who used to fall asleep as soon as she touches the pillow and sleep unmoved till the morning, waking up on demand multiple times a night was a real shock. But as nature knows its way, the troubles with sleep started long before the baby’s appearance. With the growing baby, and growing pains all over the body, waking up during the night became a ritual.

I guess this was a preparation for what was coming next - a multiple wake up calls any time of the night. But as every baby is different, so their needs are. Some babies sleep through the night from early weeks; other babies don’t miss their dose of milk. While Alex used to sleep longer during his first weeks, now 3 months old, he could wake up, up to 4 times a night! This period should pass, but while waiting for it, there are few things I discovered that can ease the exhaustion or simply make the night go easier.

Post-maternity style

I have always had a love for fashion and I haven’t been afraid to experiment with different styles during the years. However, the biggest experiment started when I had to transform my style into maternity one. Once a fan of high heels and feminine clothes, now I had to change my wardrobe, adding comfortable shoes and loose fabrics.

To be exact I started abandoning high heels long before my pregnancy. When I came to study and live in the UK my style started changing with a fast pace. The bad weather and the lack of a car meant 2 things - more layers of clothes and flat shoes. But the last phase of changes came a few months ago when I was to become a mum.

The Name Game

Names that give you a leg in life, patriotic names, burdensome names, famous gangster names, saintly names, creepy… the list goes on and on and on… I was holding our 40,001 best baby names book but the search for the perfect name wasn’t proving any success.

Missed opportunities

Have you ever felt like you have just missed to do something that could have made your day? Have you felt like there is a great opportunity, one step away from you, but instead of going for it you have just sat there, unable to move or say anything. Have you ever watched an opportunity walk away from you, leaving you with the feeling of emptiness and regret that you haven’t done anything and the moment is irrevocably gone? Is this something you have experienced more than once in the last month, for the last week?

Preparing for the BIG day

During the last month of the pregnancy I was stressing a lot about several things - what to put in my hospital bag, what is a birth plan and how to recognize that the labor is starting. I have read so many stories for births that had happened everywhere else, but not in the hospital, that I was really worried not to miss the signs until it’s too late.

Eventually, after experiencing it all, I realized that the body knows best and we should just have faith in our instincts. Even if the hospital is trying to delay your coming by suggesting you to wait a few more hours, if you know it’s time, then it’s time. It’s better to be a false alarm and to make one extra journey to the hospital, rather than risking yours and your baby’s health by experiencing birth at home or in a car. If I am to do everything all over again, there are few things I would pay more attention to, when I am preparing for the big day.

Dear ladies, mother's day is just few days away. I feel very special this year, because I not only celebrate for the first time, but I also celebrate twice! Our first baby class!

The time is passing so fast, we just started enjoying the baby sessions we were attending every Thursday and sadly they came to an end. But I would like to tell you how much we loved the 5 weeks during which they lasted.

I can’t get enough of… my baby’s smell!

There isn't a day I skip praising how amazingly nice my baby smells. And I am sure I am not the only one suffering from this “addiction”.  I have heard in movies when mothers say that their baby’s head smells of love or unicorns, hearts, stars, unicorn teardrops, all at once, but I thought it is more like cute mother adoration, rather than a real sensation. Until, I had my baby in my arms and took a breath of his fresh skin. The smell was and is still dazzling, and isn't disappearing.

The day I gave birth and how I will never be the same again

Giving birth is one of the most amazing and unique experience a woman has in her life, not only because she gives birth to a new human being, but also because she goes through an extraordinary pain. It’s not a pretty event, on the contrary, but in the end we experience one of the most beautiful and heartwarming moments in our lives – seeing our babies for the first time. There is much that can be said about labor, and there is not one and the same experience, that’s why I want to share mine with you, because it proved a real turning point in my life.

Monday, 17 March 2014

Dear diary, here is my first post

On Tuesday my baby will be 10 weeks old, it will be 10 weeks since I became a mother, and a whole new chapter in my life has started. Actually this whole transition started more than 9 months ago when I realized I am pregnant and the news turned my world completely upside down. Since then me and my partner have gone down a long path together that has led us to the moment we were holding our baby for the first time, with tears in our eyes, feeling like never before. With all the overwhelming love and joy, also came the realization that we will never be the same again, we won’t be two anymore, but three, and that not us but the little creature in our arms will come first, whatever we do.
